Porsche 911 - The better nine eleven

Porsche started a production run of Carrera GTs in 2004 in Leipzig, Germany. Originally, a production run of 1,500 cars was announced. But Porsche announced later in August 2005 that it would not continue production of the Carrera GT throughout 2006. Despite this soon end, sales were really high and surpassed total combined sales of Enzo Ferrari, Mercedes SLR McLaren and Zonda. As of May 6, 2006, 1,270 GT's had been sold, with 604 being sold at dealers in the United States.

In the international poll for the award of the world's most influential car of the twentieth century the 911 came fifth after the Ford Model T, the Mini, the Citroën DS and the Volkswagen Beetle. And this says someting.

In 2006 the model line of 911 was heavily revised and the 996's replacement, model 997, was eleased in July. The 997 keeps the basic profile of the 996, bringing the drag coefficient down to 0.28, but reminds the 993 model for detailing. Moreover, the new front is reminiscent of the older generation "bug eye" lights. Interior is also similar, with strong links to the earlier 911 interiors, but also modern and fresh looking. The 997 has 30% of its parts with the outgoing 996, but is still technically very similar to it. The 0–100 km/h acceleration for the Carrera S was recorder to be 4.2 seconds in a recent Motor Trend comparison.

The 2006 Porsche 911 is available as a coupe or a convertible (Cabriolet) version. 4 main models are available: the rear-wheel-drive Carrera and Carrera S and the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S. Base Carreras come with 18-inch wheels, full power accessories and automatic climate control. The S versions are more performance-oriented and have additional equipment like 19-inch wheels, active suspension management technology, larger brakes, bi-HID headlights, a sports steering wheel and unique exterior and interior trim.

Driving at normal speeds the 911 delivers OK that's suitable for daily commutes, but the sound of the engine is a welcome reminder that this is no your gradma's car. Lay into the power and the Porsche 911 bursts. The steering feels slightly unsure at certain speeds, but turns in with precision and is largely unaffected by uneven tarmac. The brakes are powerful and respond exactlz like you need. You have to be a skilled driver to fulfil the car's full potential, but thanks to the Porsche Active Suspension Management system, even those who only scratch the surface will be excited with the results.

You probably could find supercars with more sex appeal. You can certainly find one that's more powerful, if you prefer brute strength at the expense of feeling. You will not find a luxury car with better overall balance than the Porsche 911, and you will not find a true high-performance vehicle that is easier to use as a daily transportation. The heavily revised 2006 911 Carrera and Carrera S take everything that's good about the 911 and make it a even better.

Porsche is expected to debut its next entirely new 911, the Type 998, in 2009. The 998 is rumoured to have an entirely new 3.8 litre or 4.0 litre flat eight engine,unit aluminum body (like the Audi A8) and a 7-speed dual clutch sequential transmission.
